Mobile Phone Use in Schools is a product of the versatile information technology innovations. Mobile phone technology is one of the most important innovations of our times. The technology has imparted positively almost all aspects of life. Mobile technology is widely used; in some parts of the world people are using mobile phones to transfer and send crucial information faster than any many other electronic technology can achieve, mobile phones are also widely used for entertainment purposes by members of all social groups. However, most learning institutions especially elementary and high schools discourage use of mobile phones as a learning tool. It is my opinion that students should be allowed to use mobile phone for learning purposes. I have highlighted three reasons why students should be allowed to carry mobile phones to school.
Firstly, mobile phones as communication gadgets can be useful to students especially when they need to communicate to their parents, discuss with their colleagues remotely on important academic problems or consult with their teachers on academic matters. This way mobile phone saves time while solving urgent problems. During emergencies students are left with limited means for communicating their positions or relaying details about the emergencies but if schools allowed students to use phones their security can greatly be improved. Presently, mobile phones offer some of the fastest and efficient means of communication that should also be utilized by school students.
Secondly, some mobile phone applications that are already on the World Wide Web can be used for learning purposes. For a long time many Information Technology Companies (ICT) have been developing applications that were only compatible with desktop computers but the last two years has seen a change in the trend and more individuals and companies are now developing mobile applications. There are a considerable percentage of important mobile phone learning applications that can be used by both elementary and high school students for their day to day learning. There are also many educative portals that can be accessed through mobile websites. Some of the most popular online portals are Google books, Wikipedia, Google search, Questia online library among others. These online learning portals can offer complementary information for student’s common knowledge information and also alternative sources of educational information to add to what they get from their teachers..
Thirdly, students can apply some intricate features that been developed for various models of mobile phones to improve on their notes taking and information storage. Some mobile phones already have complete QWERTY key boards that can easily be used by students for taking notes during lectures. Mobile phones also have voice recorders, video recorders and internal cameras that can be used for capturing lectures, laboratory experiments, field works and other learning sessions. This enhanced information capturing can greatly improve on students understanding because all students will have friendly learning options at their disposal.
In conclusion, parents and teachers should stop looking the negative impacts of mobiles phones to their children but should instead device ways of using them to improve the students performances. Although World Wide Web that is open to mobile phones harbors both important and destructive information shielding their children from the destructive part of the World Wide Web also prevents them from accessing the important information available on the Web thus parents and teachers should allow controlled use of mobile phones to open up other learning avenues for them.
